St George is situated on the Balonne River in southern inland Queensland. It is the major town of the Balonne Shire, which has a district population of 3,800 people. Beautiful country gardens, streetscapes and a river walkway are features of the town. The riverside walk can be entered from The Terrace (St Georges Terrace) via cement footpaths. The times of sunrise and sunset are particularly nice to enjoy the atmosphere of the river gums, landscaping and birdlife.

Our local weather is mostly sunny. You can expect hot summer days (+34.2 degrees) and cold winter nights (-5.5 degrees). In this region, rainfall is highly variable, our annual average rainfall is 516 mm with the wetter months during summer. The weather pattern is one of droughts and flooding rains.

At night, our skies are an astronomer's dream. Big dark skies lit up with a brilliant array of stars, including the Southern Cross and the Milky Way.

This town is fortunate with quality education and health services available. These include childcare, preschools, primary schools and high school. Health services include two medical centres, hospital, allied health services, visiting specialists, community care and a retirement village. A variety of shopping is available with large grocery stores - Foodworks and IGA, a great bakery and many wonderful coffee shops.

Many lifestyle and sporting activities are available including art & craft groups, garden club, yoga, taichi and mens shed. Team sports include football of various codes, cricket, bowls, triathlon and netball. Among the individual sports are tennis, squash and golf. Horse sports are strong across the shire, these include race meetings, pony club, campdrafting and polocrosse.

Our local economy is heavy reliant on Agriculture. The district has a strong base of irrigated and broadacre farming with cropping, grazing livestock, feedlotting and horticulture amongst the local industries. There are 3 Cotton Gins within the Shire.

Each town has it's own visitor information centre with lots of Information; local crafts and gifts for sale.
Pop in to discover all the possibilities of the region. At the main centre in St George staff and volunteers are available to answer travel questions.
There is plenty of caravan parking space behind the St George Visitor Information Centre, as well as a disable access toilet.
